How to Design the Workplace to Increase Effectiveness and Retain Top Talent

Experience Designing the Workplace

A hot topic in modern business, Customer Experience has an equally important cousin: Employee Experience.

What is Employee Experience?

Employee experience is using a blend of psychology, personality types, observable behavior, interests, mental and physical ability, styles of learning, game theory, and gamification to create a custom tailored workplace.

Everything that can be customized to increase a person or group’s effectiveness will be customized.

Quantified Self:

Collecting a person’s blend of individual personality type, observable behavior, interests, preferred style of learning, mental abilities, physical abilities, and experiences is essentially used to create their Quantified Self. This is a new concept called Humanistic Intelligence.

All of these factors are collected by certain tests, mixed with monitoring a person’s activities through the technology they use, along with wearable monitoring devices (to capture things that cannot easily be observed, such as mental or physical stress.

The Layout of the Workplace:

Inspired by Pixar, the entire floor plan of the office is specifically designed to promote accidental, spontaneous collaboration and maximize creativity. However, this takes it one step further, because instead of using rules-of-thumb about human psychology to create the environment, the quantified selves of the actual employees customize what can be customized.

The Software and Equipment Used to Perform the Job:

All the software programs are customized, so that employees intuitively know and clearly understand what is expected of them. By completely “knowing” a person, everything that this person interacts with can be customized to enhance their effectiveness and quality of life.

What About Privacy?

This will be a controversial topic, as this can be seen as an invasion of privacy. In my opinion, it should remain a controversial topic, so that it is constantly being evaluated. This way, we can make sure that the ethics of how such data can be collected and for what purpose is under continual review.

Yes, there is the potential abuse of such data collection. However, that doesn’t mean that it should not be used. There is a chance that I’ll be killed in a car crash on the way to work. That doesn’t mean I should not use a car. However, it does mean that the safety of using automobiles should always be discussed, debated, and improved.

Ultimate Goal:

Essentially, the end goal is making people better at doing their job, while at the same time making it easier and more enjoyable. If done correctly, Employee Experience should be a win-win scenario for the business and the individual.

Making what the employees are supposed to do, what they want to do. Creating an environment custom-tailored to enhance both the effectiveness and enjoyment of the employee.

An Incredible Idea for a Social Network

  • There is only one real user.
  • The rest of the users are “bots.”
  • The “bots” are pre-programmed with different reactions to various situations.
  • The bots would feed input into the user by using different backgrounds, appearance, belief systems.
  • We would see where the user gravitated towards, and adjust algorithms to fit this.
  • The “user” would also be teaching the “bots” to become more intelligent, because of the quantified self data collected from the user.

As time went on, the “bots” may develop artificial intelligence of their own, by using the usage patterns (both on and offline) of the user to create a true quantified self.

From Social Network to Extension or App

We have social graph, we have open graph, and we have interest graph, but what we lack is a “personality graph.” It could even be played around with to see how recommending users based on personality.

An advanced / updated form of MBTI to form the foundations of these bots (to begin with) to develop their core algorithms. It would follow the patterns of MBTI / Socionics, but the distribution of cognitive functions would not be a template, we’d throw in some randomness to make it more real world applicable.  After all, you and I may both be ENTPs, but that doesn’t mean that our cognitive functions are distributed evenly.A new test would need to be formulated, because the online tests are not based on true Jungian Theory, but a bastardized version of it.

Eventual Benefit to Society and Technology

Part of developing this app / extension / overlay would be created by a much more correct form of testing. This could work as an extension overlay to the existing API or as a separate app. It would also need to pull from interests and social connections, (like every other form of app out there) to get a big picture of what this data really means.

For example, it may be discovered that all members of a certain type have a particular taste in music, movies, hobbies… We already “know” that they do, but this would put real results to support it.

The data collected by this application would be priceless, and could be used to develop products for years to come.

Build What’s Next, Not What Is

Focus On What’s Next, Not What is.

A billion dollar company should take advantage by heavily investing in the development of next generation technology (even more than they now are).

Build what will be popular, not just a slight improvement on what already is popular:

  • Use Android to create wearable personal tech: augmented reality glasses, wrist-based devices.
  • Use Android to power embedded systems, connecting all devices for a seamless experience.
  • Push harder with the self-driving cars to make them a finished product.
  • The auto industry lacks vision and innovation.
  • Why can’t a tech company show them how it’s done?

Use a human subject to create a quantified self. Define the entire psyche of a person. Test to see how targeted messages can impact behavior.

Allow them to use evil methods on me to extract an unprecedented amount of data. I would represent the customer, on a massive scale. Lock me in a cage and use Neuromarketing to see what you can get me to do. Be really evil to one person, to create a better experience for everyone else.

Have them keep rejecting me to allow their culture. Build a person who understands and appreciates the value of their environment.
